On July 4, 1982, Jack Matlock Jr., then ambassador to Czechoslovakia, gave a speech in Prague. 40 yrs later, going through his papers, he came across the yellowing pages with his hopeful words and phrases. In this poignant piece he shared with me, he says he could never say the same things about his country again, given what is happening in Gaza, in Ukraine, and the feebleness of US diplomacy today.
